Planning the Reading Order of a Folded Brochure

A folded brochure has two layouts: the flat sheet used for production and the sequence a reader experiences after folding. Confusing the two can put the introduction on the wrong panel or hide the contact details where readers do not expect them.

Agree the fold before writing to panel sizes

Ask the printer for the intended fold arrangement and a suitable layout guide. Different folds create different panel relationships. Do not assume that every panel should be treated identically or that a design from another brochure will fit without adjustment.

Make a simple paper mock-up and label the cover, opening panel, internal sections and back. This is a low-cost way to see how the information will unfold.

Give the cover one job

The cover should establish the subject and encourage the right person to open the brochure. Use a clear headline and relevant image or brand element. Avoid trying to place the full service list, history, contact details and special offer on the same small panel.

Decide what question the reader will ask next. That question should guide the first internal section.

Organise the inside around decisions

Group related information so the reader does not have to jump between panels. For a product brochure, a useful sequence might explain the need, available options and what to do next. For a company introduction, it might explain the business, relevant capabilities and contact route.

  • Use headings that identify the content clearly.
  • Keep captions near their corresponding images.
  • Avoid splitting a short list awkwardly across folds.
  • Give important contact details an easy-to-find location.

Check the real folded sample

Print and fold a size-accurate mock-up where practical. Check whether the opening feels natural, whether any text sits too close to a fold and whether the reader can find the next step without fully flattening the sheet.

Confirm the production orientation with the printer. A correct-looking screen preview does not by itself confirm that the outside and inside files have been supplied in the intended order.

Approve content and construction together

Proofread every panel after layout changes. If copy is shortened or an image moves, recheck the reading sequence. Keep the approved mock-up or a clearly labelled panel guide with the final artwork.
