Choosing Photos for Canvas Printing

The best photograph for a canvas is not always the one that looks most dramatic on a phone screen. The original file, composition and intended canvas size all affect whether the final result works on the wall.

Find the original image

Start with the file from the camera, photographer or original download. A screenshot of the photo adds no useful detail and may include interface elements or an unwanted crop. A version forwarded through messaging apps may differ from the original.

Ask the printer to assess the file at the intended output size. Do not assume that changing a resolution setting creates detail that was missing from the original image.

Choose the wall position and orientation

Consider whether the space suits a portrait, landscape or square composition. A photograph with a wide group of people may need a different canvas shape from a close-up portrait. Decide the available wall area before forcing an image into an unsuitable format.

If the canvas will form part of a set, compare the orientations and visual balance together. Each image should have enough room to work within its own crop.

Check what happens at the edges

Ask how the selected canvas will be finished and whether any image area is used on the sides. Faces, text and other important details near an edge may need repositioning. Approve the proposed crop rather than relying on the full original photograph.

  • Are all intended people still visible?
  • Are hands, heads or important objects cut awkwardly?
  • Is added text safely within the visible front area?
  • Does the image remain balanced after cropping?

Keep editing purposeful

Explain any requested correction clearly. You may want a distracting object removed or exposure adjusted, but heavy retouching can change the natural character of a photograph. For a memorial or family portrait, be especially clear about whether identity details must remain untouched.

Check the edited proof against the original. Do not approve solely from a tiny preview.

Confirm reproduction permission

Use photographs you own or have permission to reproduce. If a professional photographer supplied the image, check the agreed printing rights. An image being visible online does not mean it is free to use.
